Hi All! I haven't been posting on here lately because I didn't think anyone followed this blog since I moved down to the wonderful land of primary....but just in case, I have lots of important info to share, so I am going to post it anyway! By the way, if you find this information helpful, please let me know!
This week is Red Ribbon Week (aka Drug Awareness Week). Each day we have a special theme. Today was Be a "Jeanius," Be Drug Free and we all wore jeans! Red ribbons were handed out and students were asked to keep up with these all week.
Tomorrow's theme is Living Drug-Free is No Sweat! This means we can wear SWEATS to school! This would be especially awesome if it wasn't supposed to be unseasonably warm tomorrow. Go figure. :)
Wednesday will be sneakers, Thursday is team jerseys, and Friday is whatever you feel represents the "best you!" I will try to post a reminder each day...you should have gotten a form about this last week. You also would have gotten this on the back of our newsletter today IF I had not forgotten to hand it out! YIKES! Sorry!! It is written and copied on colored paper but still sitting on my table.....so, I guess I will send it home tomorrow.
Other important information in there is that we need items for our Scrapbooking Theme Basket to auction off at the PTO Auction/Dinner on November 9th. Whatever you can contribute will be helpful to our school!
Report cards came home Friday. A few students signed and returned those today. If you still have your child's, please sign and return that as soon as possible.
Our field trip to the high school to see Charlotte's Web is coming up on November 8th. If you haven't sent in permission slip and/or money, please do that as soon as possible also.
Our fourth grade will be conducting a school-wide mock election and will begin campaigning for our presidential candidates next week. Our students will begin learning about the election and presidents this week as well. They learned earlier this year that voting is both a right and a responsibility of good citizens. Please remember to exercise this right on November 6th and take your child with you so they can see you participating in our country's democracy, whatever your political preferences may be.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be THIS THURSDAY from 3:30-6:30. Please call Mrs. Clark at the school (502) 570-8800 to schedule a time if you would like to meet with me to discuss your child's progress.
This week's Reading stories:
2nd grade: Pearl and Wagner
3rd grade: William's House
Have a great night!!

TGIF!
Hi All!
Happy Weekend! I just wanted to say a special THANK YOU to all the families who joined our class this week for Grandparents' Day! Whether you were a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, other relative or friend, the students really enjoyed your visit.
If your child still wants to buy something from the Book Fair, Tuesday will be his/her last opportunity.
Next Friday, September 14th, will be our Fall Fair. PLEASE COME JOIN US! I am still in need of parent volunteers to help out at our class game of Face Painting. Thanks so much to the two parents who signed up so far!
If you are interested in being a Room Parent, please let me know!
Census papers were sent home last week. Please check over those and return as soon as possible. Make any corrections if needed.
Look for midterms to come home next Thursday. We are halfway through the first grading period, and this midterm will be to let you know if there are any concerns at this point.
Have a great weekend!

Tuesday (but feels like Monday)
I hope you enjoyed your LONG weekend and are ready for a SHORT (but busy) week!! Tomorrow is Grandparents' Day for our class! Grandparents (and parents or other family members) are invited to join us for lunch tomorrow at 12:20. We hope you can make it!
Another exciting thing happening this week is the Book Fair! If you are coming for lunch, you are welcome to take your child to the library for the Book Fair. Otherwise, students not accompanied by an adult, are asked to bring money for this on their designated Library days (which is today and Friday of this week). Students will have a "last chance" opportunity to shop again if they bring money next Tuesday before the Book Fair is taken down.
A lot of information was sent home today in yellow Monday folders (even though it's actually Tuesday--sorry for confusion!). One matter of high importance is our Fall Fair next Friday night, September 14th. Our class game is Face Painting, and we really need volunteers to work 30-minute shifts. PLEASE let me know if you can help out! A sheet came home today where you can choose your preferred time. Also, please return the census form that you received after making any necessary corrections if needed.
Lunch for tomorrow is:
Grilled Cheese
Lasagna w/garlic bread
Chicken Stix
Have a great night!

Arts and Humanities
Three of our classes (Duncan, Fredericks, Fryman) had Arts and Humanities this past week. Mrs. Duncan's class learned about drama and performed a play for us. Mrs. Fredericks' class learned about the color wheel, primary, and secondary colors. Some of our artwork is on display in the Wing C hallway by the gym. Ms. Fryman's class learned about dance. Her class performed a traditional dance called the "Virginia Reel" for us. I've included a couple of pictures from that dance. They did a great job and the kids loved it! I think everyone learned something while having fun. Thanks to Mr. Fields, Mrs. Harris, and Mr. Price for a job well done!

Back to Blogging...
Hello Friends! It's been a slow start to my blogging this year. Due to many interruptions and adjustments (including an unexpected family emergency in the past couple of weeks), I am now going to attempt to post things here regularly again.
As I have moved from 4th grade to 2nd/3rd, there are some things that will make my blogging a little different. First, there are five different teachers who each teach a different reading and math group. Thus, I can't post our homework assignments each night because they are not always the same. I can always give you the main stuff, but there will be slight variations among individual teachers from time to time. For the most part, all second graders will have similar homework. Third graders' homework will usually be similar as well. Both grades will have spelling and reading tests on Fridays.
Third graders are doing something this year called "Daily Reviews." (We sometmes call these "DRs" for short!) They will do these in fourth grade next year, too, so it's good practice! DRs alwaysconsist of review questions--so it is information that students have previously been taught. This is part of Morning Work each day and include two short questions in each of five subjects (Math, Reading, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies). Every day in Reading class, we will go over the correct answers in class. Students are responsible for correcting their answers and then putting it in his/her homework folder to study throughout the week. Every Friday, there will be a quiz over 10 randomly-selected questions from these sheets.
This week's Reading stories are:
2nd grade- Henry and Mudge
3rd grade- Alexander, Who Was Rich Last Sunday
We are all studying parts of a plant this week. We have read and taken notes on the four main parts of a plant. We have some seeds we are watching this week to see if they grow, and we are also watching the stems of celery to see how they carry water and minerals to the rest of the plant. Exciting stuff!
My homeroom class (along with Mrs. Duncan's and Ms. Fryman's classes) are participating in Arts and Humanities this week. My class is doing Visual Art with Mr. Fields. The students have learned about primary and secondary colors and created a color wheel! Some students will share their projects with the other two classes tomorrow. We will also get to see what Mrs. Duncan's class has learned in Drama and what Mrs. Fryman's class has learned in Dance.
One other thing that has been off to a slow start this year is our Lunch Menu! So sorry for the inconvenience. It frustrates me, too, as a parent. Apparently, they are still making some minor changes and are working on getting that finalized. Regardless, I will try to help you out a little and post the lunch menu on here as I have it.
For tomorrow, August 30th:
PB&J
Nachos
Chicken Tenders
Two big changes in lunch this year are:
1. Salads are no longer offered everyday.
2. PB&J AND Grilled Cheese will not be offered everyday. It will now be one or the other as the "Sandwich of the Day." (For example, tomorrow it's PB&J).
Looking ahead to Friday, August 31st:
Grilled Cheese
Chicken Nuggets
Baked Shrimp
I am not sure if I have the right choices for next week yet, so I will wait and post those over the weekend. So be sure to check back!!!
Whew! That's a lot of info for one night! So I will call it a night for now! Blessings for a peaceful night. :)

Terrific Tuesday
Today was Day 2 of normal routine. Students are adjusting to taking their things and going to Reading and Math classes. We're doing really well considering it's only the second day!! Please check your child's agenda nightly for homework. It will usually be a spelling or math worsksheet, depending on which group your child is in.
For MY reading group (3rd grade): Sort worksheet p. 1 (sorting spelling words by short vowel sounds in the FIRST syllable of each word). Students only need to do #1-15, so not the challenge words tonight.
There will be a Reading Test for all third graders on Friday over Boom Town. Please be sure your child studies his/her vocabulary words that were sent home yesterday. These will be on the test along with comprehension questions.
Second graders will have a Reading Test on Friday over Iris and Walter. A sheet came home yesterday with vocabulary words to study for this story as well.
For MY math group (3rd grade): Practice worksheet 1-2 on rounding. We will continue to work on rounding for the next few days.
Let me know if you have any questions! Have a great night!

Marvelous Monday
We had a great first week! Today we began switching classes. Third graders went to Ms. Fryman, Mrs. Duncan, or Mrs. Fredericks for Math and Reading. Second graders went to Mrs. Carpenter, Mrs. Holbrook, or Mrs. Gomez for those subjects. The students did a great job of going where they needed to. Students should have brought home a spelling list to study in his/her homework folder. This should be written in their agenda for you to check and sign tonight. Second graders are reading Iris and Walter, and third graders are reading Boom Town. There will be spelling and reading tests on Friday.
A newsletter was sent home today with some other information as well.
Our yellow folders (we call "Monday Folders") that come home on Mondays came home today with LOTS of papers! Please take time to go through these and return what is necessary. This will help you stay up to date with what's happening in our school and classroom.
Be sure to mark your calendar for Thursday, August 16th. It will be our first PTO meeting of the new school year. Dinner will be available as well--but you must RSVP. More details came home with your child today.
If you have any questions, let me know. Have a great night!

Bookshelf Makeover
Who knew that duct tape could ever be so cool! Well, I saw a picture in a magazine that used duct tape (the pretty, colorful kind) to decorate bags, furniture, anything. So I had this boring brown bookshelf in my new room that didn't coordinate with my colorful plan. So I bought some duct tape (I believe the brand is called DUCK TAPE) at a craft store and decided it couldn't hurt to try. So I put the colorful tape on the shelves first. This is what it looked like...
I inherited the lamp with the room, but may move it somewhere else--or paint it hot pink, too! We'll see....
This bookshelf may not look super high quality, but it's my first "furniture" makeover project! I love the colors and it definitely looks more ME than the ugly brown!! :)
So you can see the ugly brown I was talking about. I didn't think I had enough tape to cover the entire thing and wasn't sure it would fit against the back part. I was painting a cork board hot pink so I decided to slap some of that on the sides. I love the two colors together....and the paint doesn't look professional for sure. After a second coat, though, it at least covered the ugly brown. Just one thing left--the back. I thought about leaving the brown because if books were on it, you wouldn't really see it.....but of course I couldn't do that because it just wasn't pretty!!! So I spray painted the back white and then put my cute & colorful containers on there....and [drum roll please]....

The Beach!
One of my favorite things is THE BEACH!!! This picture is a view from our hotel room where we usually stay in Myrtle Beach. We've gone every summer, but this summer we are skipping due to our recent trip to Disney. I am definitely missing it this summer! I love hearing the sound of the waves and seeing the clear blue sky as I bask in the sun. It's a feeling of relaxation that you just can't get anywhere else....

Forever Friends
I love these people! These are our closest and oldest (er...for the longest time, that is!) FRIENDS! Actually, they are more like family...my kids call them their aunt and uncle, their kids are my kids' cousins, and I must say that we are closer to them than most people we are actually related to. Wendi and I were in kindergarten together and then became BFFs in our sophomore year of high school....and through all the years and miles apart, our friendship has stood the test of time. They are a blessing to my family and me, and I am so thankful for them!

Mrs. Price
One of my favorite things about my job is the people I work with! Sarah Price has been my teaching partner for many years., and even though I am excited about moving to 2nd/3rd grade, I will miss working across the hall from her next year. She is THE funniest person I know. Hands down. She makes me laugh everyday!!!

Things I love....
In an attempt to be a more regular blogger, and to help you know me better, I am going to try to post different things about myself on here over the summer. One thing I love is chocolate. Especially GHIRARDELLI chocolate! Last spring, when my family went to Disney in Orlando, we visited the Ghirardelli store--one of my faves! Those that know me well know that this is a little slice of heaven for me.....

We all scream for ice cream!
We went to Bradley's on Friday to get ice cream. After a trip to Lexington and a picnic lunch, it seemed like a great day to be a fourth grader!
Field Day Postponed
Due to today's weather, Field Day is being moved to WEDNESDAY. This will give the ground some time to dry out hopefully. Our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon will also be moved to Wednesday. This information will be coming home today. Stay tuned!

Testing Day 1
One day down!!!! Students worked SO HARD today! I was very, very proud of them. Tomorrow is Reading Part C, and Math Part A. There is no official homework tonight, but reviewing anything at all in any of these areas would be great.
Other options:
Other options:
- Play any of the games / websites listed on the right.
- Google "Scholastic Study Jams," and watch any of the math videos.
- Name a math topic (i.e. division; fractions; algebra; etc) and make a list of as many vocabulary words related to that topic as possible. See who can come up with more! :)
- Practice multiplying, dividing, adding/subtracting fractions and mixed numbers...make it fun by writing in sidewalk chalk on the driveway, painting it, or racing a parent/sibling! :)

Fabulous Friday and Field Trip Info
Hi and TGIF!!!
Today was Career Day! We had many guest speakers, so be sure to ask your child what careers he/she learned more about today. Fourth Grade Career Projects are due next week--my students will have to turn those in on Friday. Students should either make a powerpoint, brochure, or poster about the career that he/she has researched. This WILL COUNT for a grade, so be sure to get this in on time!
Just a reminder that the Fourth Grade Field Trip to the Lexington Legends baseball game is on April 30th (please note change from original date!!!!). Please sign/return the most recent permission slip (the one with the correct date of April 30th!) and also send in money as soon as possible. We really need to know if you are planning to attend this trip with your child by this Monday, April 16th so that we can be sure to have enough seats and lunches reserved. So, if you want to go and have not sent this information to us yet, PLEASE do so by Monday!!!
Also, if your or your child do no not plan to eat the boxed Chick-Fil-A lunches on the field trip, please let us know this by Monday, too. We have to reserve these and pay for them in advance.
Thanks for your cooperation. Hopefully it will be a great trip!!!

Thursday
Here's what's happening...
Also, the Practice K-PREP test we had scheduled for today has been rescheduled for NEXT Friday, April 20th. We will send this information home again in the newsletter on Monday. Sorry that rescheduling seems to be a pattern this week....trust me when I say, it is frustrating for us as well. Thank you for understanding!!!
- Career Projects are due next Friday, April 20th. Students have been working on these in class, and should have a pretty decent start on their research. Their final project should be in the form of a powerpoint, brochure, or poster. A letter came home about this a few weeks ago from Mrs. Lloyd. Mrs. Lloyd will be staying after school tomorrow (FRIDAY) and next WEDNESDAY, both until 4:00 if students need a computer or just need some assistance. If you'd like your child to stay after either or both days, we MUST have a note in writing, and you must provide transportation at 4:00. Email/call Mrs. Lloyd if you have any questions.
- Reading HW: Log; study for Tia Lola test
- Spelling: study for test and finish sort page 113 if not finished in class
- Study for DR Quiz (Week 29)

Marvelous Monday
Hi and Happy Monday!!! Only four more days until spring break--yippee! Tonight, there's almost more reminders/announcements than homework!

Our second spring fundraiser (Pampered Chef) was sent home today and is due on April 9th (the first day we return from spring break). The class that raises the most money will earn a pajama party with popcorn and a movie! I hope it's us!!
Also, we are currently raising money for Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. Any coins, dollars, or whatever is appreciated!!! A flyer came home about this today, too.
Finally, if you'd like to order spring pictures, please return the money and order form as soon as possible.

Thursday
Hi! Ask your child about our guest speaker today---he was great! :) He talked to the students about sound and music....Mrs. Price LOVED him! LOL...
Tonight's homework:
Reading: LOG (a new one came home today for March!)
And.....ABC book about Loser (by Jerry Spinelli) is due Monday....we're almost finished with it!
Spelling: Study words--test tomorrow!
DR Quiz tomorrow--week 24!
Also, REVISED open response questions are due Monday also (from Friday's reading quiz). The good news---no reading quiz tomorrow! We've got to finish the book tomorrow hopefully!!!!
Also, I am looking at having the Social Studies test (over the West) next Friday, March 9th. The students will have to match the location of all 50 states on this one! Last one! They will need to match the capital cities to the 11 West states. Other than that, there may be a few vocabulary terms....but not much. I will send a study guide home early next week.
Thanks! Have a great night!

Tuesday
Hi there!
Tonight's homework is:
Reading: LOG
Spelling: Study words
Science: Study "Exit Slip" from class today for quiz tomorrow (correct answers were given to study!)
Math: Finish "marbles" fraction worksheet
Social Studies: Finish Pacific States worksheet
Emotion Art picture and index card due Friday....
Gosh, that seems like a lot! However, it isn't as bad as it seems.....the study guide for science is only 10 questions and the quiz will be short. The math worksheet was also short, and most students finished it in class. Same goes for Social Studies worksheet, and I think most people got it finished as well. So, don't be scared...it shouldn't be that bad unless your child wasted a lot of time today!
Have a great evening and enjoy the sunshine!

Monday
Hi! Sorry if you've been missing me! There hasn't been much to post lately other than Reading Log and study Spelling words for homework. Today, there are a few other important notes. Please check your child's yellow folder for information about Read Across America Day this Friday. Friday's reading quiz was returned today as well. Please note that if your child did not get a 4 on his/her open response/extended written response question, then they are expected to revise it (which means do it over adding necessary corrections, etc.) until it is a 4. As we approach the end of the school year, and state testing, it is very important that we train students in answering these types of questions. By making them do them until they get it right, hopefully they will begin to see what is required to achieve a 4 and start getting them the first time. This said, all open response questions that were not scored a 4 the first time (in any subject area) are required to be revised to a 4 within one week. So the ORQ on the test returned today (Loser chapters 8-16) must be completed by next Monday. Please encourage your child to stay "caught up" on these, so they don't end up swamped under a pile of revisions. Thanks for your help with this!
In other news, this Thursday is Giovanni's Spirit Night--YAHOO! Please support our school and eat at Giovanni's for lunch or dinner (or both) that day.
Tonight's homework, again, is:
Reading: LOG
Spelling: Study words
...and the Emotion Art assignment for Mrs. Lloyd is due on Friday.
Thanks and have a great night!

100th Day of School
An unusual Friday post...
A study guide came home today for a Science Quiz on Tuesday. We didn't want students to wait until Monday night to prepare...they should also have their science book with them. :) We don't usually give weekend homework, but this unit ended on a weekend, and sometimes--that happens!
Today was the 100th day of school!!! That means only 80 more!!! Have a great weekend!

Tuesday (but it feels like Monday)...
Hi! I hope you all enjoyed the FOUR days off! The good news is that we have only a four-day week ahead, but the bad news is that we have A LOT to cram into four days!
Planet reports were due today. A few students didn't have theirs and several were scrambling to finish them this morning...so if your child didn't get theirs in today, PLEASE be sure they return this ASAP! Also, Thursday night's math homework (that would have been due last Friday) needed to be turned in today. Equivalent Fractions are still a struggle so you'll notice that there is homework on this again tonight. This week's story is Antarctic Journal--PLEASE be sure your child reads this tonight! Many students aren't reading the story on Monday nights like they are supposed to, and this week we only have four days so every bit helps! Spelling words are -er and -ar words, so please study those as well!
Tonight's homework:
Math-Equivalent Fractions worksheet
Reading-LOG & read Antarctic Journal

Also, please sign and return report cards as soon as possible. We're off and running with the third grading period already! Hard to believe!!!

Welcome Back!
Three days into the new year--can you believe it??!?!?! I hope you all enjoyed your time off as much as I did and I hope you looked back on 2011 fondly and may 2012 be full of blessings for all of you!
That said, the long, cold stretch of winter is upon us and it makes spring seem so far away! However, it's only a few more months and there is still much to be done. I ask that you really push your child to give his/her best in the second half of the year. We will be working hard and things will get increasingly difficult. Encourage your child to go above and beyond "just getting by" and strive to do better than they have in the past. Responsibility will play a huge part in this. Today, several students forgot a book (either at school or home), didn't have agenda signed, or didn't even read the story that was assigned for homework last night. We're all a little slow to come out of vacation mode and back to reality, but I hope this will improve quickly. Our character trait this month is self-control....that's a hard one for all of us! Self-control is doing what you need to do instead of what you want to do (and don't we all struggle with that?!?!?!?!!). Talk to your child about how he/she can show self-control in the coming months--and what positive effects it could have!
Fractions are on the horizon in Math--so beware! Also, we'll have a test over the Midwest states sometime next week and I'll send a study guide home in the next few days. After we study the last two regions of the U.S., we'll move on to Kentucky history for the remainder of the year.
This week's Reading story is lengthy and challenging. Marven of the Great North Woods is a great story, but will likely require at least a couple of readings this week. Ask your child questions about the characters and setting of the story and review the vocabulary on page 214.
Tonight's regular homework:
Reading: LOG (A new one for January was sent home yesterday--remember to sign it every night!)
Spelling: Study words (Contractions! Apostrophes must be in the correct place for them to be spelled correctly).
I hope your new year is off to a good start!
