Snow Day + TGIF

It's our first official snow day this year, and so far there's no snow...but I fear that something worse is on the way--ICE! So....if you're out and about, please be safe!
Some things to remember....
We are collecting food for our canned food drive. The class who brings in the most cans will win a pizza party. So far, our class has brought in 8. As you clean out your pantries this weekend, or as you go grab everything you can at the store, please consider sending in a can or two.
Assuming that we will return to a normal week next week, the 5th graders will be hosting a Holiday Café for the community on Wednesday morning from 8:30-10:30. Along with 5th grade, all other classes will be creating products to sell during this time. We will be making those on Monday, and you can purchase one on Wednesday at the Holiday Café. You are also welcome to send money with your child to purchase one for you. Keep in mind that all the classes will be making and selling things...so there will be plenty to choose from!
We will be having our Class Christmas Party on December 18th (the last day before break) at 1:30 pm. You are welcome to join us! If you are willing to donate anything for our party, please email me at betsy.fredericks@scott.kyschools.us. I intended to send a note home about this today, but due to the snow day I will send it on Monday. Some suggestions would be chips, drinks, plates, napkins, cookies, brownies, veggies & dip, fruit & dip, etc. I appreciate your help!!

Hope you enjoy this extended weekend and stay warm and dry!

Hi! I am sorry that yellow folders, Dojo Reports, and a newsletter were not sent home today due to the fact that I was out with my sick family. I will send all of these things home tomorrow. All students were asked to make a plan for "disguising a turkey" for a writing activity that we are doing this week. This plan is due tomorrow.

This week in 3rd grade Math, we are reviewing Chapter 3 for a test. This will include making equal groups, number lines, and arrays to solve multiplication problems, Commutative and Identity Property of Multiplication, and multiplying with 0 and 1. This test will be on Thursday of this week (November 14th).

Monday

I hope everyone exercises their right to VOTE tomorrow! We're studying government in Theme this week! Ask your child if he/she can name the three branches of government (Legislative, Executive, and Judicial) and if they can tell you who represents each branch (Legislative- Congress, Executive- President, Judicial- Supreme Court) on the national level. Along with that, we have discussed the privilege we have in our country to VOTE...so go out and model this very important responsibility for your child tomorrow.
In honor of Veterans' Day, we are having an assembly Friday morning (November 8th) at 8:00 am. If you or a family member are an active or retired veteran, please join us Friday morning.

We really need your HELP! Our class theme basket (Made in Kentucky) is pretty empty! We could really use some more items to make this better. We still have a few more day to collect items for this basket. Remember that this raises money for our school--and we can't do it without you!
Please join us this Friday night for the PTO Auction and Chili Supper! It's a meal you don't have to cook with live entertainment from our 4th/5th grade Chorus. There are lots of great items being auctioned off live, and there's also some teacher talents (or attempted talent) being auctioned in a silent auction. It's a lot of fun, you won't want to miss it!

Homework and other important info...
2nd graders are reading "Anansi Goes Fishing" this week; Quiz on Friday AND there will be a Math Test on Thursday over Chapter 3.

3rd graders are reading Fairy Tales this week and studying story elements (plot, character, conflict, theme, setting). There will NOT be a story from the textbook, and we will NOT have a DR Quiz this week (due to the short week). Tonight's homework was to complete the reading log and there was a Math Worksheet on Multiplication with Arrays (P57-58).

We began our "Read Your Heart Out" program today. This is a separate reading log (came home today in yellow folders) that is sponsored by Pizza Hut. Students who read 8 books each month will receive a coupon for a free pizza from Pizza Hut. These must be books and cannot be stories from the textbook. A chapter book will count as TWO books on the log since those obviously take longer to read. Your signature will be required and this will be due at the end of the month.

*A mistake on today's newsletter-- I wrote this week's specials on there but forgot that we wouldn't be in school tomorrow. So the correct schedule is:
Monday (today)- PE
Tuesday- No School
Wednesday- Library
Thursday- Music
Friday- PE

Yellow folders came home today with lots of important handouts, including Dojo Reports. These will be due on Wednesday since we are out tomorrow.
Enjoy the day off tomorrow and remember to VOTE!

Monday

Hi! Just a reminder that it's Red Ribbon Week and tomorrow's theme is "I'm too smart to mess up my dreams, wear a hat to show you use your brain!" Thus, your child can wear a hat to school tomorrow. My rule on this is that the hat must stay on their own head or in their own cubby. We do NOT share hats for sanitary reasons and they can not be a distraction to learning. :)
Also, there is a homework assignment for Mrs. Lloyd that is due tomorrow. We are learning about the character trait "Honor" this month. Honor means letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. The assignment is to ILLUSTRATE a picture of yourself showing honor to someone. Then WRITE a sentence to describe what you are doing in the picture. (Pictures are preferably colored and show some thought and effort).
Just a reminder that report cards were sent home on Friday. Please sign and return these tomorrow if possible. It is very important for me to know you are aware of your child's progress. I also sent Dojo Reports home today in yellow folders. Please sign and return these as well.

Fall Festival Auction Basket

Don't forget that our PTO Auction/Chili Supper will be on Friday, November 8th! This is one of my favorite events of the year. The biggest money-raiser for our school that night is our THEME BASKETS. Our class has been assigned to create a "Made in Kentucky" Theme Basket to be auctioned off that night. This includes Kentucky Proud Items such as Ale-8-One, Beef Jerky, Jams/Preserves, BBQ Sauces/Rubs, Art, Crafts, etc. For a list of additional items, check out www.kentuckyproudmarket.com.
Our class will need to collect items to contribute to this basket. Remember that the more great stuff we include in the basket, the more money can be raised for our school. Please start shopping now so that we can get our basket together. We'd like to have all the items collected by November 4th. Thanks so much for your help. We couldn't do it without you!

TGIF

We had our first assembly of the year today and celebrated with awarding students for Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, and Good Character for the first grading period. Report cards came home today and a copy of your child's MAP Test was included. MAP testing is done three times a year (fall, winter, spring). Since this was the first one, we will be looking for GROWTH as the year goes on. Showing progress is the key on this. Please go over this report and the report card with your child. You can keep the MAP report, but please sign and return the report card next week. Please call or email me to set up a conference to discuss your child's progress and/or any other concerns you may have. We won't be doing a "conference night" like we have in the past, so I am flexible on when we can meet.
Have a great weekend!!!

Kentucky Kids' Day 2013

Friday was Kentucky Kids' Day at SGE. This year's theme was International Cultures. The second and third grades focused on Africa. Since we have been focusing on animals and habitats in Science, we decided to go with an African Safari theme in our hallway. Our class researched giraffes and wrote informational paragraphs about them. We even turned our classroom door into a giraffe!

The fourth and fifth grades focused on Europe. They made us "passports" so we could visit some of the different countries in Europe. We saw the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy....

...and we visited England. We got to see Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and we even caught a glimpse of the Queen of England! Here she is outside the palace with her guard, Prince William, and Princess Kate.... (I especially LOVED the queen!)

We heard several guest speakers from various cultures. We enjoyed some music and dance from China....

...but I think everyone's favorite was the African drums...

Overall, I think it was a FUN day and a great learning experience for all! I hope everyone has a safe and restful Fall Break!!

Math Rounding Rap

Third Graders are learning about ROUNDING as a way to estimate this week. There is a great song we've learned to remember an easy way to do this. If you'd like to see it, click here.

Coming Up This Week...

Hi!
It is an important skill for students in both grade levels to learn to complete work in a timely manner. Many students are not using class time wisely, and thus, are not completing work accurately and completely. Students are expected to complete this work at their valued time (recess), but we have found this is not a very conducive environment for completing work. Since so many students are struggling with this, one of us will be staying in each day Monday through Thursday to see that this work gets completed. Students will join their classes outside on the playground once they are finished. Students who do not complete their unfinished assignments during this time will be expected to take it home to complete it. We will attach a note to it to let you know that he/she did not get it finished even during the time given. We hope this will help those students to work more efficiently, so that taking it home will not be necessary. However, if the work is brought home, we expect that you will see that it is completed and returned the following day. Thanks for your help with this!

Third Grade Parents: Don't forget about Daily Reviews (we call them DRs). There will be a quiz over these each week on Thursday. (We gave it on Friday last week, but it will be on Thursdays from now on). I explained this in the newsletter coming home tomorrow, but if you have questions, you can let me know. Thanks for helping your child review these important concepts so they can hopefully transfer to long-term memory!

Thanks for all you do!

Answers to DR Week 1 Day 1 (3rd grade only)

Since third graders are just beginning DRs (Daily Reviews), I thought I'd post the correct answers for you. Keep in mind that it is your child's responsibility to correct these answers in class when we go over them and to study them each night for a quiz at the end of the week. DRs are a review of information that has already been taught and hopefully a good way to remember some of those old skills. We will take a grade on the weekly quiz which is made up of the exact same questions given throughout the week. Students just won't know WHICH questions from the week will be on the quiz so he/she should study all of them. :) In other words, if your child writes down the correct answers and studies them each night, then he/she should do well on the quiz.
Today was only Day 1 so I thought a few people may not have gotten the hang of accurately correcting these in class yet. Just in case, here are today's answers:
Math:
1. 75
2. 34
Reading:
A should be circled (fact) and B should have a rectangle (opinion).
Language Arts:
1. dog
2. brother
Social Studies:
1. 7
2. George Washington
Science:
1. rabbit
2. water

Marvelous Monday

Hi! We had a great day today. It was our first day of officially switching classes for Math and Reading. It was a busy day and so I forgot to send home today's newsletter full of important information! Look for it in your child's binder tomorrow, but here's a preview of what you'll see:

Welcome back! We had a great first week getting to know one another. Today we started our regular routine which included switching classes for Reading and Math.

Please note that we will not be giving spelling tests this year. We WILL be studying words throughout the week and practicing the associated skills, but we will NOT be giving a weekly test over those words.

Please note that we are using a web-based behavior system in our class that will send a weekly report of your child’s behavior directly to your email. To do this, I must have your updated email address. If you have not yet given me this information, please do so as soon as possible. If you do not have email access, please let me know that as well so that I can send you a printed copy of your child’s behavior report each week.

Other ways to stay in tune with what’s happening in our room is to follow our classroom blog: www.sgefredericks.blogspot.com. You can also sign up for text updates (which is handy when I forget to tell the students something before they leave!) that will come directly to your phone. To do this, simply text @499b to 502-603-6005. These are mass texts sent through a program called Remind 101.

(There is a separate number if your child is a third grader in my READING class which was sent home with those students today).

Finally, please turn in all important forms as soon as possible. Several room fees still need to be paid as well. The fee is $20 and checks can be made out to Stamping Ground Elementary. Thanks to all of you who have already done this!

Yellow Communication Folders came home today and you can look for these every Monday. This is where you'll find information that the school sends out along with graded papers (and usually, a newsletter!). I also included a Book Order. If you'd like to order any books from this order, please fill out the form on the back and send it in with a check made out to Scholastic by August 23rd. I will try to send one of these home approximately once a month.

For homework tonight:
3rd Grade: Reading Log (be sure to sign) and Study for DR Quiz on Friday (over Week 1)
*Ms. Fryman's Reading Class only is to read "Boom Town" for homework (which will count for their Reading Log) and to complete the Spelling Sort page 1.

2nd Grade: Math worksheet over Even & Odd Numbers

Have a great night and stay dry!

First Day of School

Welcome Back! We had a great first day of school! I hope your child felt comfortable in my class today. We spent a great deal of time organizing our supplies today--there were so many! Hopefully your child came home with a binder tonight that included an agenda. The agendas were a little difficult to snap into some of the binders, but as long as they have it WITH their binders that will work! We did not have any homework tonight, but I asked the students to write "No HW" in the column with today's date and to get it signed for homework tonight. This will be a daily responsibility so I wanted to get this started right away. Beginning next week, students will lose points (and "clip down") if his/her agenda is not signed. Please be sure to check your child's agenda each night and sign it!
Our class behavior system, Class Dojo, will send you a detailed report of your child's behavior each week directly to your email. For this reason, it is very important that I have your email address. If you have not already given me this information, please do so as soon as possible. You can email me at betsy.fredericks@scott.kyschools.us and I will reply to you and let you know I have received it. This will also be a great way for us to communicate.
As I am collecting forms, I notice that many are not sending in the enrollment from.  All students need this form completed  I know it is confusing because it says New Student Enrollment Form - but it is for everyone. Sorry for the confusion, if you need a new form let me know.   Please return all forms as soon as possible. Thanks so much for all you do at home!

Reminder

Don't forget to sign up for text alerts about our class on Remind 101. All you have to do is text @499b to 502-603-6005. This will send reminders directly to your phone! This is great especially when I forget something before the kids leave. #oldage #badmemory

Where did the year go?

It's hard to believe we are actually in the final week of school! Where did the year go? I have truly enjoyed my transition from intermediate to primary, and look forward to continuing this next year. I wish our third graders well as they move on to fourth grade, and I am excited for our second graders to return as the leaders and role models in our class next year!
It has been an exciting year full of changes--full of ups and downs, smiles and tears, but most of all, a lot of learning for all of us (including me!). Thank you to all of you who have helped along the way. Whatever contribution you've made in your child's education (whether it's been time, tears, prayers, money, or brain power) is never wasted!
Enjoy your time off because the new school year will be here faster than this past one flew by! Take time to do the things you love, and spend time with the people you care about. Rest. Relax. Read. Make memories...and cherish the old ones, too.
Thank you for your support  this year, for making my job easier, and for sharing your child with me!

Keep Calm and Bubble On...

It's hard to believe there are only 13 days of school left, and testing week is here already! K-PREP (Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress) tests all students in third grade and above. At the third grade level, Reading and Math are the only subjects assessed. This begins on Wednesday (May 8th). Please encourage your child to take this test seriously by doing his/her best and SHOW WHAT THEY KNOW! Our school was rated a PROFICIENT school this year based on last year's assessment and we want our students to maintain this status with this year's test. To help your child do his/her best, please be sure they get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive on time for school.
We had an assembly on Friday to kick off and motivate our students for testing this week: "Dorothy Takes the KPREP." I posted some pictures below. To watch the entire performance, click here.
P.S. I think the Wicked Witch of the West really isn't so bad after all... :)

Wednesday

Parents,

The Spring State Testing window will be May 8, 9, 10, 13, and 14. Please avoid scheduling doctor’s appointments and dentist appointments on these days. I understand that some of you have appointments that you have already set and they occur during the window. I understand that can happen. Your child will have a make-up to complete and that will happen outside of our classroom with another adult. Your child will be allowed to resume testing upon his/her return beginning where the class is on that date. Then, he/she will be pulled out individually to complete his/her make-up.
So, if you have not yet scheduled appointments, please avoid those dates. Students who begin and then leave DURING that portion of the test will NOT be permitted to finish it.

Here is tonight's homework:
MY Reading Class- Log
All 3rd graders- Study for DR Quiz 25 tomorrow!
All 3rd graders are reading "Two Bad Ants" this week. My Reading Class will have a quiz over this story NEXT Friday, May 3rd. All other third graders will have a quiz over this story THIS Friday, April 26th.

2nd graders- Weekly Spelling due daily
Reading Quiz this Friday, April 26th.

Please remember that we are having a book drive this week. We are trying to collect as many books as possible to send to our friends in Ghana through the International Book Project. Please send in any gently used books that you can part with to help a worthy cause.

Don't forget to sign up for text reminders about our class. Just text @499b to 502-603-6005.
Thanks and have a great night!

Field Trip Friday

We survived our trip to All-Tech Arena today for Ag Day! It was a great trip, and your child should have brought home lots of treats to remind him/her what we learned while we were there. Due to time, there may have been a few centers they didn't get to, but there was still a lot of information to take in. We appreciate Central Office making the trip possible!
Next week should be a normal week...only five more Mondays! Enjoy your weekend and hope for some warmer weather. :)

New Communication Tools

I want to let you know about two new tools I am using in our classroom. The first one is Class Dojo.

This is a behavior management system I use in the classroom. Students can earn points for positive behaviors (being on task, team work, participation, being prepared, etc). He/she can also lose points for inappropriate behaviors (disrespectful, unprepared for class, and being off task).
You can get a report on your child's specific behaviors at the end of each week. I sent home a parent code last week to help you access your child's information. If you didn't get it, don't worry! Just email me at betsy.fredericks@scott.kyschools.us and I will invite you using the email address you use to contact me.

Another tool I am using is Remind 101. This is a way to get reminders and messages sent directly to your phone. To sign up for text messages and alerts about our class, text @499b to (502) 603-6005.

These are both great ways to help stay connected to what's going on with your child and our class! Let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Thanks!

Did You Know?

Sometimes my daughter will ask me, "Mom, was TV invented yet when you were little?" I think Geez....I'm not THAT old! However when I think about what life was like when I was a fourth grader, it was very different. Everything was handwritten in those days...and had to be neat, even if it was written in cursive (gasp!), or else we'd rewrite it. We had one computer that I can remember in our elementary building.I remember thinking it was a "big deal" if we got to use it.
It's amazing to think about how much has changed in the last 30 years! I encourage you to watch this video for a quick reminder of the times--and how fast they're a-changin'!

Wonderful Wednesday

If your child is in my homeroom, they may mention that the day started off with a little craziness.....well, it did. I had to be out of the building for meetings today, but when I dropped my own kids off at school this morning, my Academic Team had to do some "filming" for a special project we're working on...and we had to do it right then before I left since I was going to be out today....so my students (and my substitute teacher) started their morning watching our fun filming!

On a SERIOUS note, we are having KPREP Practice Testing tomorrow for all 2nd-5th graders. Second and third graders will be tested in Math and Reading. Students have set goals for this and have discussed ways to reach them. We try to treat this the same as we treat the official KPREP Test in the spring, so students have an idea of what to expect.

So please....encourage your child to take it seriously and do his/her best; be sure they get a good night's sleep (which means they are hopefully in bed by the time you're reading this!); have them eat a good breakfast in the morning (brain food!); and help them to be on time for school in the morning.

All the other regular "stuff"-- third graders need to be sure to study Daily Reviews for Week 20 this week. The quiz will be on Friday due to practice testing tomorrow.
Book Fair is going on this week! Students can shop on their Library days (our next Library time is Friday) or with an adult.

MY Reading Class- Reading log should be completed/signed tonight...these will be collected for a grade on Friday. Also, our reading class set a goal this week. Any student who misses only ONE question (or ZERO) questions on this week's DR Quiz will get a special treat from me on Friday! Everyone in our class is capable of meeting this goal....so I am anxious to see how many will put forth that effort!

Have a great night!

TGIF

Dear Parents,
Happy Friday!!!
Today was the Spell-a-Thon! Thanks to those of you who sent in your pledges. Also, thanks to those of you who supported SGE by eating at Giovanni's last night!!! What a great deal--eating pizza and earning money for our school...whoo-hoo!!!

Final drafts of personal narratives were due today. A few students asked to take these home over the weekend to finish. Please be sure that these come back to school on Monday if your child chose to do this.

We finished our second round of Arts & Humanities Drama Unit this week. Students learned about Performance Elements this time and acted out fairy tales and nursery rhymes NONVERBALLY! Be sure to ask your child about some of the other elements he/she learned!

Have a great weekend!

Spell-a-Thon Friday!!

MY Reading Class: Reading Log and Book Projects are due tomorrow! Students will be graded on the neatness and creativity of the project, as well as their PRESENTATION and knowledge of the book. This will be in place of a Reading Test grade. The students have had a week to work on this, and points will be taken off if not turned in on time.

Other news: Tomorrow night is Giovanni's Spirit Night! Enjoy a night out and benefit SGE at the same time.
Book orders need to be turned in tomorrow. I had asked for them today, but a few students asked for one more day.
PLEASE email me or write a note if you are willing to donate something for our Valentine's Day Party next Thursday. I will be sending out some notes tomorrow to those of you who already volunteered. I appreciate your help! Thanks so much!!
Have a great night!
