I know you're not supposed to like birthdays when you get older, but I can't help but like mine! Everyone has been great to me today, especially my students! They even tricked me by creating a diversion and making me a card and yelling "Surprise!" They have hugged and wished me Happy Birthday all day long! I am so thankful for such a sweet class this year....THAT is the best present of all!
Now for the regular stuff...there is a Math RETEST tomorrow for anyone who got below an 85% on last week's Math Test. This is an excellent opportunity to improve the grade they had the first time. There is detailed information about this on Mrs. Price's Classroom Blog. You can get there by clicking the link on this page to the right.
In addition, there will be a Grammar Quiz on Thursday over Types of Sentences: Interrogative (question), Imperative (command), Declarative (statement), and Exclamatory (exclamation). We did a worksheet together in class today that can be used as a study guide. You may want to review this with your child over the next two days.
A diagram of a life cycle is due tomorrow in Science. Many students started this today and may have finished it already. If not, it needs to be a life cycle from the book or a poster discussed in class today (in other words, don't just make one up). It needs to have a title, labels, color, pictures, and don't forget to put your name on it!
Finally, don't forget reading logs and spelling words!!!
Have a great night!!!!

Marvelous Monday
Happy Monday! Hopefully you saw in today's newsletter that there will be a Math RETEST on Wednesday (sadly, due to the fact that SO many students did SO poorly on Friday's test!). Thus, tonight's homework is to review Friday's test (which Mrs. Price went over in class today so it can now be used as a study guide!) to retake this test on Wednesday (if your child got below an 85% on the original test). In addition, please complete reading logs and study spelling words (long e and long o this week). Don't forget to sign agendas!
If you did not turn in your fundraiser orders and money today, please do that as soon as possible.
Finally, Happy Birthday today to Emma Rose AND her mom who share a birthday (how cool is that?!?!?)!!!!!
Have a great night!

Super Sunday
I hope everyone had a wonderful and blessed weekend! Just a few reminders as we begin a new week. First, fundraiser orders and money are due tomorrow.
Also, the month of August ends this week and our character trait of respect will be changing to knowledge for September. We'll have an assembly on Friday to kick off our new character trait!
Next, I will collect the reading logs for August on Wednesday and give your child a new one for September.
If you find any work in your child's binder that is unfinished (in the folder marked "unfinished work") or without a grade on it, please see that he/she completes it and returns it to school. While I know some assignments take longer than others, we want to encourage responsibility by turning all assignments in. Thanks for your help on this!
We have P.E on Wednesday of this week so that is the day to wear/bring tennis shoes!
Have a great week!

A Visit from Ecuador
We were very lucky to have a special guest in our Social Studies classes today! Mrs. Nellie Guato, an English teacher from Ecuador, came to speak to our students about the culture in her country. The students learned a little bit about the location, geography, clothing, products, food, and language of Ecuador! We have been learning about latitude and longitude in Social Studies class and we found out today that the capital of Ecuador is Quito, which means "equator" in Spanish. This is because the capital city is right on the equator--right in the center of the earth!
We contacted Ms. Nellie through the International Book Project. Our fourth graders will actually participate in a program again this year called Books as Bridges. This is a pen pal program between American students and students in developing countries. We have not yet been matched to a partner country, but each fourth grader will later be assigned a pen pal to write to in another part of the world. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about other cultures (while integrating writing skills) and helping children around the world learn more about our country.
Check out some of the pictures from our visit today!

Terrific Tuesday
Happy Tuesday! It's beautiful fall weather and I hope you are enjoying it! However, many students are suffering with colds, allergies, and even some viruses. It's always difficult as the seasons change and our bodies try to adjust, so be sure your child is getting plenty of rest!
There's a few things I want to let you know that may be confusing. First of all, the reading logs are a requirement Monday through Thursday. If your child reads (as he/she should) on one of these days, you are to sign and/or initial the box of the date in which they actually do the reading. (For example, today is August 23rd. If your child reads for 20 minutes tonight, you should write your initials in the box of August 23rd.) This reading can be silent reading, reading aloud to you, or even occasionally you reading aloud to him/her. The purpose is to encourage reading so as long as you feel that your child is doing this, and you are signing this box to show your awareness and approval of their reading, then this is acceptable to me.
Now, if your child reads on any other day (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday) then feel free to write that down in the box of the date in which they read as well. There is no penalty for reading more than is required!!! The only consequence is that it counts as not having all of their homework done if the reading log is not filled out Monday night through Thursday night. At the end of the month, when I collect the logs, I will give them a reading participation grade based on the amount of reading done according to the log.
Another important event coming up is Grandparents' Week. Our school celebrates this during the entire week of September 12-16. Each class is designated a certain day of the week to invite grandparents to join us for lunch so as not to overwhelm our cafeteria staff. Our designated day will be Monday, September 12th. We eat lunch from 12:05 to 12:30, so if you would like to go ahead and invite your family members to join us on that day please do so! The Book Fair will also be that week so that grandparents and other guests can have the opportunity to shop with the students. More information will come home about that in the next week or so.
Finally, tonight's homework is just to do the reading log (and fill out the box for August 23rd!), study spelling words, and finish the "sort" spelling worksheet page 5 (if not completed in class). This should be in your child's homework folder if you want to check! Don't forget that there will be a Math Test on Friday over Number Sense so feel free to review with your child any of the things they've been learning in the last couple of weeks.
As always, let me know if you have any questions and have a great night!!

Terrific Tuesday
Today was our PTO's kick-off for the fall fundraiser! Your child should bring home a packet with all the information. Tonight's homework is:
Writing: "Plans for this Year" worksheet (please write in complete sentences)
Reading: Log
Spelling: Study words
and go over today's Daily Review for Friday's quiz!
Also, don't forget to check/sign your child's agenda tonight. If your child pulled a stick today, there will be something written there for you to know (ex: CP= class preparation, FD= following directions, etc...). There is a chart for these in the front of the agenda in case you forget.
Thanks so much all you do!

Marvelous Monday
I hope you all enjoyed your weekend! As I hope you remembered, we do not (usually) give homework on Fridays and thus, you don't have to sign agendas on Fridays either (yippee!).
Your child's agenda should be filled in tonight with the following homework:
Reading LOG--this was sent home today (and should be in your child's binder in a page protector) with directions at the top--he/she will need to read for 20 minutes each night and you will need to initial on the date to show that you saw this assignment completed.
Spelling--study words (the list came home today in the homework folder as well as on the back of the newsletter)
Math-Place Value worksheet (even problems only)
Many students may have completed this already, but it should still be in his/her homework folder for you to see.
One other thing you'll notice is the "Daily Review" in the Handouts to Keep folder. We go over these questions in class everyday (Monday through Thursday) and will give a quiz each Friday over questions selected randomly from these worksheets. This will be a quick way for students to constantly review what we've already learned. He/she will want to keep these pages in his/her binder throughout the week to look over for Friday's quiz. Have a great night!

Writing
Tonight's homework is a worksheet called "Sharing Thoughts and Feelings." This has ten sentence starters that I would like for students to finish with his/her own thoughts (and/or feelings!). Try to encourage them to be thoughtful and not just put a word or two, but to write down a complete thought. Writers spend a lot of time reflecting on their experiences and writing down what they think and feel, so this is a simple step to get started in that direction!
It shouldn't take too long so you can still have time to enjoy the beautiful weather outside this evening!

Two Days Down....
...and only 175 more to go!!
Tomorrow will be the first day of our regular schedule. Mrs. Price will be over to teach Science and Math, so tonight's homework is to come up with three questions to ask her. These can be about Math, Science, or Mrs. Price...whatever you'd like to know! You can write these questions on notebook paper. Please be sure to write them in complete sentences!
Don't forget to sign agendas, too!! Have a great night!

Fabulous First Day
We had a GREAT first day today! It was so exciting to get to know a new group of 4th graders and hopefully they enjoyed getting know one another as well.
Tonight's homework (yes, homework on the first day!) should be in his/her homework folder. Your child has two important responsibilities tonight:
1. Complete the assignment (perhaps with your help): Two Facts and a False; and
2. Get their agenda signed by YOU! (It is their responsibility to track you down....your signature signifies to me that you were aware of the assignment and that you saw him/her complete it).
It looks like we've got a fabulous class this year! I am looking forward to another great day!

School Supplies
If you haven't already gotten your school supplies, please try to do so before the first day of school. We will begin organizing and using our supplies right away! You will also need a backpack to carry your things back and forth each day. If you haven't already gotten a supply list, you can find it by clicking here.
Don't forget that this Friday, August 5th, is our Open House! Mrs. Price and I will meet in the Library at 7:00 to discuss some of the important things you'll need to know about the upcoming year. I look forward to meeting all of you then!
